Matter Explained: What It Means for Your Smart Home (2026)

Matter promises one device that works with Apple, Google, Amazon and Home Assistant. Here's what it actually requires in 2026, and what still doesn't work.

The Matter logo is stamped on light bulbs, locks, thermostats, and the Zigbee coordinators sitting next to plenty of routers in 2026, and the promise attached to it is deceptively simple: buy the device, and it works with Apple Home, Google Home, Amazon Alexa, Samsung SmartThings, and Home Assistant at the same time, without picking a side.

That promise has a history. Matter started life in December 2019 as Project CHIP, a joint effort between Amazon, Apple, Google and the Zigbee Alliance to stop the smart home from splintering into incompatible walled gardens. The Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) published Matter 1.0 on October 4, 2022. Four years later, the standard has moved through several major revisions — 1.5 in November 2025, 1.5.1 in the spring of 2026, and 1.6 as of June 2026 — each one closing gaps the previous version left open.

What the logo doesn't tell you is that "Matter-certified" is a floor, not a guarantee. A device can carry the badge and still sit on your network unreachable if you don't have the right piece of supporting infrastructure. How Matter Works

Matter is an application-layer protocol — the shared language devices speak once they're already on a network — not a radio or a cable itself. It runs over three transports: Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and Thread, a low-power mesh protocol. Bluetooth Low Energy shows up only during setup, to commission a new device onto the network; Matter 1.6 goes a step further and lets some devices complete that entire handshake over NFC at 13.56 MHz instead, skipping Bluetooth altogether.

The standard has moved fast since 1.0. Matter 1.5, published November 20, 2025, added support for cameras, window and door closures, soil sensors, and expanded energy management. Matter 1.6, announced June 17, 2026 at the CSA's Unify event, introduced Joint Fabric (covered below), NFC-based commissioning, and "Thermostat Suggestions" for smarter automation. A point release, 1.5.1, is reported to have landed March 31, 2026 with camera-focused maintenance fixes.

Certified-device counts vary by source and shouldn't be quoted as a single hard number — estimates through mid-2026 range from roughly 750 curated devices to over 1,200, depending on whether variants and regional SKUs are counted separately. What matters more than the count is which categories those devices actually cover, which the rest of this guide breaks down.

Matter Over Wi-Fi vs. Matter Over Thread — The Distinction That Actually Matters

This is the single most practical thing to understand before buying anything with a Matter logo on the box. Manufacturers choose the transport, not the buyer, and the two behave very differently.

Matter over Wi-Fi devices — most smart plugs, plug-in lights, and cameras — join your router directly. No hub, no border router, nothing extra to buy. The tradeoff is power draw: these devices need mains power or frequent charging, which is why you rarely see a battery sensor running Matter over Wi-Fi.

Matter over Thread devices — battery sensors, locks, buttons — sip power and self-heal as a mesh, but they cannot talk to your phone or ecosystem app without a Thread border router translating between the Thread mesh and your IP network. A Thread device bought without a border router will pair, then sit on the network unreachable.

The Aqara Motion and Light Sensor P2 is a useful cautionary example here. It requires a Matter controller and Thread border router to function at all, and even then, testers found that pairing it directly to Alexa exposed only a basic "motion detected" state — it couldn't trigger other devices or push notifications, and because it's a pure Matter device, it won't appear in Aqara's own app without an Aqara Hub M3. The Matter logo didn't make it plug-and-play; it made it dependent on exactly the right combination of controller and border router.

Lighting shows the same split in miniature. Nanoleaf's Essentials Matter bulb ships in two variants: one over Wi-Fi and Bluetooth (no hub needed), and a separate Thread version that requires a border router and also acts as a Thread mesh router itself once installed — worth confirming current availability of the Thread SKU specifically before buying, since Nanoleaf has scaled Thread support up and down. Eve Energy's Matter smart plug is a Thread device by design: no bridge required, but a compatible Thread border router is non-negotiable, and a phone alone won't do it. Buyers who'd rather skip the infrastructure question entirely can go with a Wi-Fi-only alternative like a Kasa or Tapo Matter plug instead.

The rule of thumb: before buying anything described as "Matter over Thread," confirm you already own a Thread border router. If you don't, the device you're about to add either needs to be Wi-Fi, or you need to add a border router to your cart too.

A "controller" manages your Matter devices and fabrics; a "border router" bridges Thread's mesh to your IP network. Several 2026 devices do both jobs at once.

For a household already committed to one ecosystem, the built-in hub for that ecosystem (HomePod mini for Apple, an Echo for Alexa, a SmartThings Station for Samsung) is usually the path of least resistance. Device Availability by Category

Matter support isn't uniform across product types. Some categories are mature and well-stocked; others are barely off the ground.

Smart lighting is the most mature category — it was Matter's first breakout use case, and IKEA moved its entire lighting range to Matter-over-Thread-plus-Zigbee in late 2025 with the Kajplats line. Smart locks are a supported category, but availability is patchier and pricier than sensors or plugs. The Yale Assure Lock 2 doesn't ship as a Matter device by default — it takes swappable smart modules, and only the separate Matter-over-Thread module exposes it to Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and SmartThings through a border router, with Bluetooth as a fallback. The base lock without that module is not Matter. One correction worth flagging: the Schlage Encode Plus is not Matter-compatible, despite some coverage claiming otherwise — Schlage's own support confirms this. Smart thermostats are supported, and the ecobee Smart Thermostat Premium goes a step further by doubling as a Thread border router itself, alongside occupancy and air-quality sensing. Cameras are the newest and least-developed Matter category. The spec added camera support in Matter 1.5 (November 2025), using WebRTC with STUN/TURN so multiple ecosystems can consume the same video stream, but as of mid-2026, Samsung SmartThings was the only major platform to have actually shipped Matter-camera support (from December 19, 2025). Multi-Admin, Fabric Slots, and Matter 1.6's Joint Fabric

Matter's other headline feature is "multi-admin" — the ability for one device to be controlled by several ecosystems (say, Apple Home and Home Assistant) at once, each running its own "fabric." In practice, this has been messier than the marketing suggests.

Devices are only required to support a minimum of five fabrics. That sounds generous until you factor in that Apple Home alone is reported to consume two of those slots for iCloud syncing — leaving less headroom than expected for a household running Apple Home, Google Home, Alexa and Home Assistant on the same device. Matter 1.6's "Joint Fabric," announced in June 2026, is aimed squarely at this problem: it lets multiple authorized controllers co-administer one shared network that counts as a single fabric toward a device's five-fabric limit, rather than each ecosystem burning a separate slot.

A related headache is fragmented Thread meshes. Before Thread 1.4, each brand's border router built its own isolated mesh — an Apple HomePod mini and an Amazon Echo in the same house could end up running two Thread networks that don't share devices. Thread 1.4, finalized in September 2024, standardizes credential sharing between border routers so a device on one company's mesh can be adopted by another; as of January 1, 2026, new border routers can only be certified against Thread 1.4, with Thread 1.3 applications no longer accepted. Rollout has been uneven: SmartThings implemented credential sharing first, IKEA followed, and Amazon supports the underlying SDK but exposes only a subset of the sharing features — so don't assume two Thread border routers in the same house will automatically merge into one mesh.

Should You Switch From Zigbee or Z-Wave to Matter?

For anyone running a working Zigbee or Z-Wave setup through Zigbee2MQTT or a dedicated Zigbee hub, the enthusiast consensus through 2026 is consistent: don't rip it out to chase Matter. A mature Zigbee mesh already delivers battery life, lighting-group responsiveness, and routing stability that a fresh Matter migration won't automatically improve — and ripping out a working install trades known-good behavior for the fragmentation issues above.

The practical middle ground, and the one Home Assistant itself is built around, is running both: keep the existing Zigbee or Z-Wave devices in place, and buy Matter for new purchases going forward, particularly if those new devices need to be visible in more than one ecosystem app.

Part of the reason not to rush is that Matter frequently exposes less functionality than a manufacturer's native integration. Philips Hue's dynamic scenes and entertainment sync are richer through Hue's own integration than through Matter's baseline light controls. TP-Link's Kasa switches have been documented needing a firmware update and a factory reset before they'd pair over Matter at all — and even after that, Matter exposed only basic on/off control, none of Kasa's advanced scheduling. Matter's job is compatibility, not feature parity.

What Matter Still Doesn't Do Well

Beyond cameras, a few gaps are worth setting expectations around before you build a purchase list. Complex cross-ecosystem automations — a routine you build in Google Home firing a scene in Apple Home — still don't transfer between apps; Matter standardizes the device layer, not the automation layer. Manufacturer-specific features like cloud recording or AI-based person and package detection remain proprietary add-ons even when the underlying camera hardware is Matter-certified. And version mismatches are common: a device might ship supporting Matter 1.5 or 1.6 features, while the ecosystem app controlling it still only exposes what Matter 1.0–1.2 defined.

None of this makes Matter a bad standard — it makes it an incomplete one, three and a half years after 1.0. Buying with that in mind avoids the disappointment of assuming the logo means "fully solved."

Which Matter Setup Should You Choose?

Apple-first household, one or two Thread sensors: an Apple HomePod mini covers the controller and border router role cheaply, provided you already own at least one other Apple Home accessory.

Alexa-first household: check which Echo model you own — the 4th-gen Echo, Echo Plus (2nd gen), Echo Show 10, Echo Studio and Echo Dot Max all include Thread border routers; older or smaller Echos may not.

SmartThings or existing Z-Wave locks: the Aeotec Smart Home Hub (SmartThings-powered) is the only mainstream option here that keeps a Z-Wave radio alongside Matter and Thread, so Z-Wave locks don't need replacing.

Cross-ecosystem household, Zigbee-invested: the Aqara Hub M3 is the strongest single box, bridging Aqara's own Zigbee devices to Apple, Google, Alexa and SmartThings simultaneously — just remember it won't touch non-Aqara Zigbee gear.
